WE FINISHED IT!!! (Born Free by Joy Adamson)

Our journey with Elsa has come to an end. I'm so proud of how the kids have endured such a long but endearing documentary of the reality of this lioness's life on the African savannah. The book was a bit over their heads but they stuck with it with a little paraphrasing from me and LOTS OF PICTURES!!! We look forward to watching the movie soon!

Rhinos, Reptiles, and Recess

A short trip to the zoo brought a close to our unit on the African Savannah. We stopped in to see the elephants and rhinos.

While there, we bumped into a friend who had just finished her study on reptiles, so we tagged along with her. Lots of fun!

In Search of Cattails

Our science journal put us on assignment...to find some cattails. Not too far from our home was a drainage area that had developed a small wetland! It was a little too late to see any wildlife since summer was over.
Lots of cattails!

A Visit To The Zoo

Our local zoo developed a new indoor play area. We had to try it out! Of course, we had to visit the animals while we were there. It was a beautiful day to go to the zoo!

See the black bear in the background?

Penguins...

Zebras...

I wonder if they want to be veterinarians one day?

Little One sorts the vegetables...or makes a bigger mess?

My kids have turned into animals!!!!

Grandfather Mountain

What a perfect day! We tried to go to Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina two days ago and we couldn't even get to the gate!

Our first stop after lunch was the Nature Center. There we found white-tailed deer, otters, black bears, and mountain lions. The kids were so excited to see the animals they just studied.

After that, we went to the top of the mountain where the Mile-High Swinging Bridge was located. The view was clear and beautiful!

Our Tree

Our science journal is asking us to choose a tree to watch throughout our school year. Here is the tree in Summer.

The kids measure the tree's circumference to estimate it's age.

Animal Habitats

Our curriculum focuses on animals and their habitats. This week we were introduced to all the habitats we will study. Woodlands, Wetlands, African Savannah, Arctic Tundra, Desert, Tropical Rainforest, and Ocean. We'll be traveling all over the world this year!
